Being in emigration is about more than just pictures in front of beautiful buildings. Sometimes it&#8217;s a heavy, suffocating feeling that your new country doesn&#8217;t accept you, that you&#8217;re a stranger in a foreign land. This article is an attempt to understand what happens on the inside when the outside world becomes a challenge.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">Summary<br><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">Emigration is analyzed in modern literature within psychology and migration studies as a complex psychosocial process. It encompasses not only geographical mobility, but also deep identity changes. The article examines factors that have a long-term impact on migrants&#8217; mental and physical health: from expectation dissonance to chronic acculturation stress and physiological changes in the body.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">Introduction: Cultural Bereavement<br><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">While public discourse often portrays emigration as an opportunity for economic prosperity, research (Berry, 1997; Bhugra, 2004) reveals a darker side to this process. The migrant encounters &#8220;cultural bereavement<\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> (eng. cultural bereavement), a specific form of loss where one grieves the loss of social structures, linguistic environments, and self-perception in the old system. Against this backdrop, success stories often conceal an existential loneliness and identity crises that arise when one feels <\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt;\">unwelcome&#8221; or foreign in the country.<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial; font-size: 12pt; font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif;\">The greatest cost of emigration is not the home one left behind, but the loss of certainty about who one is. This is a situation where a person&#8217;s qualifications and self-esteem do not align with their new social position in the host country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\"> * Postponed Life Syndrome: this is a psychological state where the migrant puts their happiness, hobbies, and emotional fulfillment <\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">on hold<\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">, focusing solely on future goals. Life becomes a <\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">preparation for living<\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">, creating a constant inner feeling of emptiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\"> * Cognitive dissonance: the perfect image of <\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">life abroad<\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\"> created on social media deepens the internal conflict. Highly qualified migrants experiencing status loss often go through identity fragmentation where they feel like &#8220;nobody&#8221; where they should have been &#8220;somebody.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">We often say: &#8216;I will live later, when I have achieved status, when I have learned the language, when I have earned enough.&#8217; But &#8216;Postponed Life Syndrome&#8217; is a trap; while we prepare to live, real life passes by in the waiting room.<\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">2. Burnout: the hypercompensation trap<br><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">Burnout in an emigration context has unique characteristics. According to Maslach and Leiter (2016), it&#8217;s not just fatigue\u2014it&#8217;s emotional exhaustion and depersonalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">* Hypercompensation: to prove their worth in an <\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">unwelcome<\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\"> environment, migrants often work twice as hard as locals. This is a defense strategy to neutralize discrimination or devaluation, but in the long run, it leads to complete exhaustion of the body&#8217;s resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\"> * Symbolic violence: When the environment subtly conveys that your accent or background is a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">deficiency<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">, one experiences symbolic violence. In the context of migration, loneliness is often not a choice, but a forced state due to cultural barriers. <\/span><\/div><\/span>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">* Double absence (eng. double absence): due to modern technology, the migrant becomes a <\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">digital nomad<\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">; physically, one is in the new country, but emotionally, one lives in the realities of the home country. This creates an <\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">intermediate state<\/span><span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: \"Times New Roman\", serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">: one can no longer fully participate in the life of the home country, but one also cannot (or is not allowed to) participate in the life of the host country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">&nbsp;* The neurology of pain: Cacioppo&#8217;s (2009) research shows that the experience of social rejection activates the same areas in the brain as physical injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">4. Authenticity in a foreign environment requires the courage to set boundaries between work and leisure, as well as to seek out a community that provides a sense of security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">Conclusion<br><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-decoration-line: initial;\">Emigration is not just a physical relocation, but a deep existential rupture. Success should not be measured by material achievements alone.
